How we choose

Cloth earns a hanger. It is not ordered by the pallet.

This page is about the work before a piece reaches the rail: why ivory instead of white, why three bags instead of thirty, why pearls and not a tray of trends.

A piece has to survive Blackburn weather and a real evening.

We do not buy a dress because it photographed well in a studio in another country. We buy it if it can leave Higher Church Street in a garment bag, sit through a dinner, and still look like itself at midnight. The ivory column is warm, not optical, because winter light in this town is kind to warmth. The black column is matte until you turn, because shine that never stops is costume.

Handbags are chosen for a job, not a logo. If a tote cannot tell you its width, it does not belong on the marble table. Accessories, for this opening, means pearls: one strand, one pair of hoops. A tray of trends would date before the coat does.

Nine is not a teaser. It is the edit.

New cloth will arrive when it earns a page, not when a season says it should. If you are looking for four hundred SKUs, you are in the wrong room. If you are looking for the coat that closes over the gown you just tried, you are in the right one.
